A beautiful set of Ankole Horn and brass coasters.

Made with ethically sourced cow horn, this beautiful set of four coasters sit perfectly in a mid-century inspired brass holder. Valued for both its hardness and its ability to become soft and pliable when heated, Ankole cattle horn has been used by East Africans for centuries. Each coaster was cut by hand, shaped and molded at high temperatures, meticulously sanded, and then polished for a smooth and shiny finish.

Handcrafted by a metalsmith in our Kampala workshop, the brass holder was cut out by hand from a 4mm brass sheet. It was flattened, heated, shaped, and then buffed and polished to a high-shine.

Due to the considerable size of Ankole horns and their wide range of naturally occurring colors, each coaster is truly one-of-a-kind; no two are exactly alike. Ankole cow horn is indigenous to East Africa, making this material extremely rare.

Each coaster holder set was individually crafted from start to finish by an artisan in a fair trade environment in Uganda. Imperfections are expected and contribute to the uniqueness of your handmade good.

  • MATERIALS: 100% pure brass + 100% Ankole cow horn, locally sourced
  • MEASUREMENTS: Brass holder measures approximately 2.5 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide. Each coaster measures approximately .25 inches tall (a slight variation in size is expected).
  • COLORS: Natural light wood and marbled, natural dark horn
  • CARE: Over time, the pure brass will take on a patina that will make the piece uniquely yours. If you prefer to maintain its original sheen, a brass polish may be used. Because the coasters are made of pure horn, which is made up of keratin protein, there are special considerations for their proper care. If necessary, wipe clean with a soft cloth. It is important to avoid leaving your horn items near heat sources or in direct sunlight, as warm temperatures can cause the horn to dry out or change shape.
